In 2003 werd de oppas geïdentificeerd als Hans Schwarzwaldt (1513-1575) op basis van een gelijkenis met het onderwerp another portrait miniatuur geschilderd door Holbein in 1543. Dat portret, met de inscriptie ANNO ETATIS // SVA 24 1543 , wat aangeeft dat de oppas vierentwintig was in 1543 (en dus geboren circa 1519), werd geplunderd uit het Danzig Museum (nu de Gdansk National Museum) door de Duitse bezettingsmacht in 1943 en vervolgens door het Rode Leger van de Sovjet-Unie in 1945 opgeëist als oorlogsbuit. Het portret, een van een aantal kunstwerken waarvoor restitutieverzoeken van de Poolse regering zijn ingediend, bevindt zich op het Poesjkin Staatsmuseum voor Schone Kunsten, Moskou. In 2016 werd de jongeman geïdentificeerd als Gregory Cromwell (c.1520–1551), zoon van Thomas Cromwell, graaf van Essex, eerste minister van Henry VIII.
