Esmée Winkel (Curaçao, ...) is een Curaçaos-Nederlands botanische wetenschapper, illustrator en kunstenaar.

Esmée Winkel werd geboren in Curaçao en groeide daar op. Hier ontstond haar liefde voor de natuur. Ze vertrok voor studie naar Nederland, waar ze haar BSc diploma biologie behaalde aan de Universiteit Leiden. In 2013 rondde zij haar opleiding af aan de Academie voor Beeldende Kunsten en Vormgeving en haar Master in Scientific Illustration aan de Universiteit Maastricht.

Sinds 2008 is Winkel werkzaam voor Naturalis Biodiversity Center, het Nederlands onderzoeksinstituut en Natuurhistorisch museum in Leiden. Hier is zij wetenschappelijk tekenaar en illustrator, gespecialiseerd in de botanie.[1] Door haar werk is zij regelmatig buiten in het veld en in de Hortus botanicus Leiden te vinden. Zij maakt gedetailleerde lijntekeningen in zwart/wit van planten en maakt als kunstenaar ook botanische tekeningen in kleur. haar wetenschappelijke illustraties en botanische tekeningen spelen een belangrijke rol spelen in de publicaties van wetenschappelijk onderzoekers. Door te illustreren voor PhD kandidaten, Postdocs en onderzoekers lever ik een bijdrage aan dat onderzoek en Botanie in het bijzonder. Veel van haar wetenschappelijke tekeningen werden gepubliceerd in internationale tijdschriften en Flora-afleveringen. Voor haar gepubliceerde botanische kunst heeft Winkel verschillende onderscheidingen en prijzen ontvangen ./ is zij veelvuldig bekroond.

Haar werken zijn opgenomen in de collecties van Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Hortus botanicus Leiden, Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, New York State Museum, Lindley Library en in vele prive verzamelingen wereldwijd.

Esmée Winkel zeer actief in het promoten van de kunst en het ambacht van botanische illustratie in Nederland en daarbuiten. Door internationaal te exposeren, workshops, lezingen en demonstraties te geven, ben ik overtuigd dat de bekendheid van wetenschappelijk illustratie en botanische kunst zal toenemen en zo onderstreep ik het belang van het bestuderen van de natuur.”

Esmée Winkel is mede-redacteur van de heruitgave van de Flora Batava. Zij is lid de Vereniging Botanisch Kunstenaars Nederland en Nederlandse Orchideeën Vereniging en andere soortgelijke verenigingen in de UV, UK, Belgie en oostenrijk.


Als wetenschappelijk tekenaar specialiseert zij zich in gedetailleerde botanische illustraties.[2]

Esmee Winkel is wetenschappelijk tekenaar en maakt gedetailleerde lijntekeningen in zwart/wit. Daarnaast tekent ze ook botanische tekeningen in kleur. De technieken die ze gebruikt zijn: inkt, aquarel, potlood en digitale tekenprogramma's.

Esmée Winkel werkt als wetenschappelijk illustrator voor Naturalis Biodiversity Center en is ook regelmatig in de Hortus botanicus Leiden te vinden. Haar werk heeft verschillende onderscheidingen mogen ontvangen zoals de Jill Smythies Medal van The Linnean Society of London en de Botanical Illustrator Award van de American Society of Botanical Artists.

Zij schildert ook, vooral in aquarel. Ze is gehuwd met Mark Somers en heeft twee kinderen.?

Esmée is geboren op Curaçao in het Caribisch gebied. Ze woont nu in Nederland, waar ze Biologie en Wetenschappelijke Illustratie is gaan studeren. Na het behalen van haar BSc diploma studeerde ze aan de Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design en de Universiteit Maastricht, waar ze de Master Scientific Illustration volgde. Sinds 2008 werkt ze als botanisch kunstenaar voor Naturalis Biodiversity Center, het Nederlands onderzoeksinstituut en Natuurhistorisch museum in Leiden. Ze is ook vaak te vinden in de Hortus botanicus Leiden en in het veld om fascinerende en unieke planten te bekijken en te tekenen.

Esmée was born in Curaçao in the Caribbean. Her home is now in the Netherlands, where she moved to study Biology and Scientific Illustration.She has a BSc degree Biology from Leiden University and a Masters Degree in Scientific Illustration degree from Maastricht University and Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design. She works as a Scientific Illustrator for the Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Dutch Academic research institute and Nationaal Herbarium Nederlands. The techniques she uses are: ink, watercolour, pencil and digital drawing programs.

Growing up on the beautiful Caribbean island Curaçao, Winkel developed a vast interest in nature. So she moved to the Netherlands to study Biology at the Leiden University. After having received her BSc degree she studied at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts and Design and Maastricht University, taking a course in Master Scientific Illustration. Since 2008 she has been working as a botanical artist for Naturalis Biodiversity Center, the Dutch research institute and Natural history museum in Leiden. Quite often you will also find her browsing through and drawing fascinating and unique plants at the Hortus botanicus Leiden as well as out in the field.

Samen met haar collega's en voormalige mentoren Anita Walsmit Sachs en Jan van Os (Jill Smythies medaillewinnaar 2007) is Esmée Winkel zeer actief in het promoten van de kunst en het ambacht van botanische illustratie in Nederland en daarbuiten. Zij heeft enkele van haar prachtige illustraties meegebracht naar de Society en u zult ze in de bibliotheek kunnen bewonderen zodra we zijn geëindigd. Esmée Somers Winkel is ongetwijfeld een zeer waardige winnares van de Jill Smythies-prijs voor gepubliceerde botanische kunst".[1]

“Working in the newly-established Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Esmée Somers Winkel is a young and very talented Dutch botanical artist, who combines technical skills and artistic qualities with a very keen eye for botanical observation—three ingredients for excellence in botanical illustration. Although she only completed her Masters in Scientific Illustration at Maastricht University and the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in 2013, she has already produced an impressive portfolio of published and “in press” scientific drawings in international journals and Flora instalments. Indeed, she has brought some of her wonderful illustrations to the Society and you will be able to see them displayed in the library once we adjourn. Esmée Somers Winkel is undoubtedly a most worthy winner of the Jill Smythies Prize for published botanical art”.[2]
