In the region of Shaanxi, there are reported to be approximately around 1000 villages which fall under the category of ‘floating villages’. These are villages on top of hollow grounds which are a result of intensive mining. Hollow ground results in many different consequences for the environment above it, for example cracked walls are a common phenomenon which result in unsafe housing. Another consequence of hollow grounds is the fact water sources dry up and farmers have difficulty growing crops. All these consequences lead to big resettlements and rapidly emptying villages.[1]
