Life and work[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]

Yorick was born in Alkmaar, The Netherlands, as Yorick Sebastiaan Westerkamp-Poll, but he moved when he was a baby to a small village on the country-side Oudkarspel, Langedijk. In the village in the North of Holland, he grew up together with both his parents, his older sister and his older brother. Even though his parents separated from a young age, they still lived in the same house all together. Yorick is the youngest of five. From his father's previous marriage, he got two half sisters. Until today, Papa Yorick's family is very important to him and he has a close relationship with his mother, brother and sister. According to his mother, Yorick was a very shy boy that had difficulty with expressing his emotions. His speech problem partly played a role in it. Until he was seventeen, he was unable to pronounce the Dutch letter R. Therefore he could not even pronounce his own name. Papa developed thanks to this, a huge vocabulary by using synonyms of words that had the letter 'R' in it. This problem also resulted in him not wanting to talk a lot and he rather listened to others. According to his teachers at primary school and middle school he was an extraordinary boy that observed a lot and was extremely intelligent and mature for his age. This continued throughout his youth. In an interview Papa Yorick stated that [there] was always a cropped up overload of creativity inside of me but I was too afraid to express it[1]. He attended gymnasium at the Murmellius Gymnasium (2009–15), Alkmaar. After he graduated, Yorick worked as a social worker. In March 2016, Papa Yorick moved overseas and lived and worked in several countries in South East Asia, mainly Vietnam. Before moving back to The Netherlands, he lived in the capital of Australia, Sydney. During that time he worked for the luxury womenswear label ELLERY. During this time he actively started using his pseudonym Papa Yorick in and around the art and club scene. In 2017, he attended the Preparatory Year[2] at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. Currently he is studying the basic year of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie [3], which he will successfully finish in June, 2019.

Confronted with a lot of obstacles related to expression of his sexuality and depressions, Papa Yorick was searching for a way on how to approach the world in order to comprehend and in extend also critically look at society. Being influenced by the queer and drag scene, he developed the idea of approaching the world by taking on roles of characters. His work is also strongly characterised by an interest in the role of a body in relation to society, often manifesting itself in a playful, absurd manner. Whilst creating, starting from a concept, the development of a narrative plays a strong role, for example in Cindy is Bot Top nor Vers.
